Keely To Kick Off Great Manchester Run

Olympic Champion Keely Hodgkinson has been named as official starter for the Great Manchester Run...

Olympic gold medallist Keely Hodgkinson will be the official starter for the 2025 AJ Bell Great Manchester Run, set to take place on Sunday 18 May. The announcement marks a proud homecoming moment for the Leigh-born athlete whose career has soared since her early days with Leigh Harriers.

Keely captured the hearts of the nation last summer with a dominant display in the 800m final at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, powering to gold and securing her place as one of the most celebrated British athletes of her generation. Now she returns to her roots to help inspire the next generation of runners at one of the UK’s most iconic running events.

More than 35,000 runners are expected to take part across the 10K and Half Marathon events, with the 2025 edition shaping up to be the biggest Great Manchester Run in over a decade. As the official starter, Keely will be on the platform at the start line to set the runners on their way through the heart of Manchester, cheered on by tens of thousands of spectators.

Keely says: "Running in Manchester runs in my blood. Can’t wait to start this year’s Great Manchester Run, not only to set some of the world’s best runners on their way, but also the thousands of fellow Mancunians who share my love of running!”

Sir Brendan Foster, President of The Great Run Company, added: “Keely was the star of the show last summer at the Paris Olympics. Her determination to win had everyone on the edge of their seats. She’s a proud product of Greater Manchester, and her incredible rise from local athlete to global star makes her the perfect race starter. We’re absolutely thrilled she’s joining us.”

The event isn’t just for elites - runners of all ages and abilities are encouraged to take part, with Junior & Mini events also happening across the weekend. With entries for the 10K, Half Marathon and Junior & Mini events selling fast, organisers are encouraging anyone who wants to take part to register as soon as possible to avoid missing out on what promises to be an unforgettable day in Manchester’s sporting calendar.
