Ingleborough Mountain Race

A Classic In The Making

With a mix of classic fell routes and stunning scenery, the Yorkshire Dales Classics promises to be a highlight of the 2026 fell running calendar in the north...

Settle Harriers have launched a new fell running series this year with the introduction of the Yorkshire Dales Classics, a four race programme set against the spectacular backdrop of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

All four races are organised by Settle Harriers and showcase some of the most iconic terrain in the Dales, beginning with Pen y Ghent in early June and concluding with the Ingleborough Mountain Race in July. Runners who enter all four races will benefit from discounted entry, while those who complete the full series will receive a special Yorkshire Dales Classics memento.

The opening race of the series takes place on 6 June with the Pen y Ghent Fell Race. Starting in Horton in Ribblesdale, the route climbs through open fields at Bracken Bottom Scar and continues up to the summit of Pen y Ghent. This race is regarded as an ideal introduction for runners aspiring to take on bigger mountain challenges.

The second race is the Settle Hills Race on 21 June. Set amongst the striking limestone scenery above Settle, the seven mile course packs plenty into its distance before competitors make their way back to the Rugby Club for a warm welcome and refreshments.

On 1 July the series heads to Whernside for a race that returns in a new format after more than a decade. The course begins with a fast start beneath the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct before a direct and steep climb up the old hikers route towards the summit. Runners then turn north to reach the top of Whernside before descending on the Three Peaks walkers route and rejoining the Dales Highway. Organisers say: "With this being the first running of the revised route, competitors will have the chance to set an inaugural course record on the highest fell in Yorkshire."

The series concludes on 18 July with the Ingleborough Mountain Race. As the race forms part of Ingleton Gala Day, friends and family can enjoy the festivities on the Gala Field while waiting for runners to complete their challenge.
