TR24 Letters at the Conti Thunder Run

All in it together again at TR24

This popular off-road event ran like clockwork.

Loud, proud and exhilarating from start to finish: this was the 2021 Conti Thunder Run on 23-25 July that returned after a year-long absence due to Covid-19. It was an unforgettable weekend for everyone involved...

Runners, their friends and families converged once again at Catton Park, Walton upon Trent in Derbyshire for the Conti Thunder Run or ‘TR24’ as it is affectionately known. After more than 16 months of rules, restrictions and three national lockdowns, people were ready to let off steam and what better way of doing so than by running multiple 10K laps in a friendly, supportive and safe environment.

Organisers PVS Events delivered on all fronts and the Great British weather played its part too with warm, dry, sunny conditions at this private estate with its 250 acres of parkland. Tents were pitched, registration completed and old friends caught up with over a drink or two in the barn bar.

The fun began on Friday with a Pyjama Run (PJ Run) for children followed by music and DJ’s as a way to relax and unwind before racing the next day. Saturday saw the 10K at 9am then a race briefing for TR24 where runners started to line up, nervous and excited in equal measures as they waited for the clock to tick down.

TR24 started at 12 noon when solos, pairs, teams of 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 streamed away to begin their mile munching journeys as their partners/club mates ticked off the miles. They wound their way around (and up and down) a challenging course consisting of trails, woodlands, fields and stone tracks whilst enthusiastic marshals clapped and cheered them on. This continued through the night and into Sunday until the finish at 12 noon.

There were strong performances in all categories and an incredible number of laps achieved – particularly impressive in a pandemic that has disrupted training and racing schedules.

All the results can be viewed via the runABC Midlands race listing page.

The weekend was summed up by the runners as ‘awesome’ and ‘amazing’ who praised the organisation, facilities and the Covid-19 measures. They vow to be back next year.

Roll on the 2022 Conti Thunder Run!
