Four For McColgan As London Celebrates Running
Eilish McColgan made history as almost 20,000 runners finished the Vitality London 10,000 on a huge weekend of running in the capital...
This relates to: Vitality London 10,000
Eilish McColgan became the most successful woman in Vitality London 10,000 history on Sunday, but her record fourth victory was only one part of a huge celebration of running on the streets of the capital.
McColgan won in 31:50, finishing comfortably ahead of Jess Warner-Judd in 33:13 and Kate Estlea-Morris in 33:58. It continued an encouraging end to a difficult season following the broken toe she suffered at the TCS London Marathon.
Kadar Omar Abdullahi continued his own remarkable September by winning the men's race. Fresh from victory at The Big Half three weeks earlier, Abdullahi made it back-to-back wins at two of London's biggest road races, ahead of Phil Sesemann and Freddy Richardson.
Behind the elites came the scale and diversity that increasingly defines the event. A total of 19,431 runners finished the 10K, with record numbers participating through running community groups.
Among them were 40 women from The Kyn Community taking on their first 10K after receiving mentoring and personalised training plans. The final wave also featured thousands joining the Celebrate You body positivity movement, led by Bryony Gordon and Helen Thorn.
Combined with Saturday's 8,065 Vitality Westminster Mile finishers, 27,496 people took part across the weekend.
The elite winners supplied the speed, but almost 20,000 different journeys to the finish made this a much bigger celebration of running.
