Will Bekele Be King Of The North?

Legendary runner, Kenenisa Bekele, will be on the Great North Run start line in October...

Kenenisa Bekele is the latest high-profile name to be added to the elite men’s field at the 2022 Great North Run. The Ethiopian powerhouse won the event in 2013 in a legendary line up featuring Sir Mo Farah and all-time great Haile Gebrselassie.

Bekele is also a three-time Olympic Champion, five-time World Champion and 2019 Berlin Marathon Champion. His extensive road racing experience will stand him in good stead as he goes up against three exciting young prospects.

Bekele will face stiff competition from fellow Ethiopian Selemon Berega, the Olympic 10,000m Champion and Ugandans Joshua Cheptegei, the World Record holder for the 5000m and 10000m, and Jacob Kiplimo, the World Record holder and reigning World Half Marathon Champion.

Bekele said, “I’m looking forward to going back to the Great North Run. I have great memories from the race and can’t wait to take on the next generation. Bring on the new kids on the block!”

The Great North Run will be televised live on BBC Sport. 60,000 people have entered the event which will take place on Sunday 11 September, returning to its iconic city to sea route after two years of pandemic related changes.
