Great Winter Success
Around 3000 people took to the streets of the Scottish capital for the Simplyhealth Great Edinburgh Winter Run held in tandem with International XCountry run on Saturday. The runners set off from the start line at Holyrood Park, cheered on by Scottish legend Liz McColgan.
The 5k route took in a scenic tour of the Royal Park, travelling up and around Arthur's Seat before crossing the finish line near the Palace of Holyrood House.
Darren Thom of New Marske Harriers took victory in a time of 16:14, eight seconds ahead of East Kilbride AC’s Jamie Clements, third place went to Peter Moffett (Falkirk Victoria Harriers) who clocked 16:47.
In the women's race, Claire Moffett (Falkirk Victoria Harriers) came first with a time of 18:04, with Jennifer Elvin of Metro Aberdeen AC following in second in 18:23. Dundrum South Dublin AC’s Linda Byrne was third in 16:47.
The event was followed by the Simplyhealth Junior Great Edinburgh Winter Run, where children from seven to 13-years-old got the opportunity to take on a 2.5k course in the park.
Later in the day, elite athletes took part in the Great Edinburgh Cross Country which saw Scots double European indoor champion Laura Muir lead Great Britain to victory in the mixed team relay.
The British quartet of Tom Marshall, Alexandra Bell, Adam Clarke and Muir finished in 11:33, seven seconds ahead of Belgium, with Europe third and Ireland fourth.
“I worked quite hard at the start of the race and then eased in the middle to make sure I had a strong finish,” said Muir following her victory.
“I could hear the crowd and their tone of voice wasn’t too panicky so I thought I was OK. But you never know, so I made sure I had a good bit in reserve.”
