The Langdale Marathon and Half Marathon take runners through the Great and Little Langdale valleys in the heart of the Lake District. Surrounded by dramatic fells and some of Cumbria's finest scenery, both road races are designed around a challenging course where the landscape and sense of achievement take priority over fast times.
The half marathon completes one lap of the route, including the demanding climb towards Blea Tarn with gradients of up to 25% and around 1,709ft of ascent. Marathon runners complete the same course twice, tackling the Blea Tarn climb on both laps and accumulating around 3,418ft of ascent. The undulating and at times steep roads make this a particularly demanding marathon and a distinctive challenge for experienced road runners.
Both distances start together and are chip timed, with aid stations and event support provided around the course. The roads remain open to traffic, so runners are expected to take appropriate care throughout, particularly on narrower and more uneven sections. The combination of substantial climbing, quiet valley roads and impressive Lake District surroundings gives the event a character unlike a conventional city road race.
