Grand Tour of Skiddaw

Grand Tour of Skiddaw offers sublime Lake District views

44 miles is certainly not for the fainthearted and the ascent, which totals around 7136 feet, means that the La Sportiva Grand Tour of Skiddaw, due to take place on Saturday 1 September, is right up there with some of the toughest trail races on the northern circuit.

That said, the ultra also provides some of the finest sights in the northern Lake District on a course that starts and finishes at Lime House School near Dalston. The route follows the River Caldew, winding through fields and woods until Caldbeck.

From here, the scenery changes to the stunning and remote feeling Caldbeck Fells, where you make your way past Skiddaw House to the car park at Latrigg. The climb up Skiddaw follows, and after visiting the summit runners descend via Longside Edge giving fantastic views over Bassenthwaite.

Then you contour round passing through Orthwaite, Branthwaite and Fell Side before the route brings you back to Caldbeck and the return journey to Lime House School along the banks of the River Caldew. There is a 16.5 hour cut off for the event, with the fastest runners generally finishing in around half this time.

This year’s event is also a qualifying race for the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc, giving four points, and is also part of the Runfurther Ultra Championship series for 2018. Further information is available here.
