Felix McGrath & Rebecca Twardochleb win gold at Newcastle 10K
Easter came early for Felix McGrath and Rebecca Twardochleb at the Newcastle 10K (Sunday 14 April). The Newcastle (Staffs) AC duo struck gold for Staffordshire.
This was the 7th outing for the KMF Newcastle 10K, a popular race in the area and part of the North Staffs Road Runners Association (NSRRA) programme of events. It also incorporated the Staffordshire 10K Championships.
On a cold and windy morning over 450 runners streamed away from Newcastle College towards Knutton where they faced a long, arduous climb up Black Bank. They managed to get their breath back at Scott Hay before the long downhill stretch into Silverdale then along the Wammy and a sprint towards the finish.
Felix McGrath was first across the line in 32:38 with Carl Moulton of Boalloy RC taking second place in 33:14. He was closely followed by Orlando Corea of Birchfield Harriers who was third in 33:18.
Rebecca Twardochleb was in impressive form, winning the women’s race in 38:04 - which was a PB and set a new course record. Another Newcastle lady had a successful day: Grace Ranford was runner-up in 39:49, was the second Staffordshire AAA female and winner of the ladies team prize. Emma Taylor of Congleton Harriers was third in 40:55.
Plenty for Newcastle (Staffs) AC to celebrate with victories in the men’s and women’s races, two gold medals, team prizes, a new course record and a string of PB’s.
There was a blue, bottle opener medal and an all-important beer for every finisher – both of which were much appreciated after Black Bank!
