Eastbourne 5 2020 top three women

Wind 'assisted' times at Eastbourne & Newbury

Storm Ciara huffed and puffed and very nearly blew the entire race programme off course on Sunday (9 February), yet there were some surviving events among the wholesale cancellations.

Powerful winds and crashing high tides failed to deter the tough folk at We Run, They Run, I Run who were the driving force behind the Eastbourne 5. A modified route and dynamic risk assessment meant the race could proceed and 147 runners were safely back in 1:12:18.

The commonsense approach was appreciated by all those involved. Organisers posted this on the race website: “As you are probably aware by now, the country is due to be impacted by a storm on Sunday. This will impact our race, however, we have done everything we can for the many people contacting us hoping that the race will go ahead. The race is ON. We have been on the course today to identify potential danger points. Whilst it will be extremely windy and wet, we have devised a contingency course that avoids our main concerns, which are buildings and the tide at Splash Point by the Redoubt”.

The modified route kept all runners and marshals within a one mile radius, on a well-defended and well-maintained section of the seafront. The chip timing mat worked well and produced full results with Eastbourne Rovers' Chris Dodd (33:06) and Matt Southam (33:21) finishing ahead of Dylan Boulton (Hastings, 33:59) in the men's race and a clean sweep for Eastbourne Rovers' Sue Fry (W40, 37:12), Liz Lumber (W50, 37:32) and Nicky Taylor (40:36) in the women's race (pictured above).

Meanwhile, RunThrough Events went ahead with a full programme at the rather exposed Newbury Racecourse in Berkshire. Some 600 hardy athletes competed in 5K, 10K or half marathon races comprising one, two or four laps of the famous equestrian sports venue.

The race winners in ascending distance were Connor Morgan (Abingdon AC, 20:37) and Sophie Bhatt (Newbury AC, 22:28); Daniel Blake (Oxford City AC, 35:18) and Kate Estlea (40:44); Jonathan Westlake (M40, 1:20:37) and Claire Pusey (Burnham Joggers, 1:35:27).
