Gateshead 5K

Door Remains Open For Gateshead 5K

A good number of the country's fastest runners are expected to be making their way to the River Tyne on Wednesday 15 August for the latest installment of the Quayside 5K – an event that is known to be a haven for PBs.

The out and back course will see runners move along the River Tyne from the Newcastle side of the Millennium Bridge to Newcastle Business Park, under the famous Tyne Bridge and returning to cross the iconic Gateshead Millennium Bridge to finish in Baltic Square.

For 2018, the upcoming event will be used as the Gateshead Harriers & AC Club Road Championship and will be part of the selection process for the Northern 6-Stage Road Relays Championships.

Organisers have split the race into two, with an elite and mass race. The entry list already looks frighteningly quick: Paulo Pinheiro of Sporting Lisboa is one the fastest on paper with a PB of 14:04 and has put himself down for a target time of 13:59. Marc Brown and Carl Avery follow shortly behind with PBs of 14:47 and 14:29 respectively.

In the women’s competition, Gateshead’s Stacey Smith, Sale Harriers’ Sonia Samuels and Wallsend’s Danielle Hodgkinson will all be vying for top spot and aiming, perhaps, to improve upon the current course record, set by Heather Sellars in 2014.

Entry for the Quayside 5K remains open and is available at jut £17 (or £15 for affiliated runners).
