runABC is in the process of upgrading and improving its online service so you might encounter the odd glitch over the next week or so but rest assured we’re working on them and the new site will be a fantastic resource for our running community.

Round the Walls Race

December brings races aplenty across the North of England

Training in the winter sees a variety of challenges – diminished daylight and more perilous terrain, not to mention social engagements can all impact on even the most well-regimented training schedule.

Yet, if you are looking for a beacon of light to tear you away from the prospect of another drink at your office party, there are races aplenty in the north of England to keep you on the straight and narrow.

Things kicks off in a suitably Christmasy manner this Sunday (1 December) when BTR Liverpool hosts its world-famous festive curtain raiser, the Santa Dash. Up to 7,000 runners are expected to take part in the event which has been going since 2004.

From festive fun to PB pursuits at the Percy Pud 10K, a South Yorkshire favourite and one that always brings with it a series of fast times. Indeed, this year, £1,000 is up for grabs if the male (29:13) or female record (32:23) is bettered on Sunday.

Staying in Yorkshire, the following week will see 10 year celebrations at the Epilepsy Action Reindeer Stampede in Bradford. On the day, runners will be entertained and encouraged by carollers and bands to help create a fantastic festive atmosphere. A far smaller affair than the Santa Dash with a field of 500 or so yet it is one that raises invaluable funds for a great cause.

The same day, Team OA will host its infamous PieAthlon in Huddersfield. The unique event, dubbed ‘The Hungriest Race in Yorkshire’, sees participants tackle a 6k course dotted with pie stations. On Boxing Day, if you feel so inclined and able to prize yourself away from turkey leftovers, there’s action taking place at the East Hull Boxing Day 10K and Chester Round the Walls Race.

There’s nothing quite like getting those festive miles in.
