Great North 10K

Date Confirmed For 10th Great North 10K

The 2018 staging of Simplyhealth Great North 10K will take place on Sunday 8 July, a date that will see the event celebrate its tenth staging. Introduced as the sister event to the Great North Run, the race now stands as the biggest 10k in the region and drew in a record field of 5,500 runners last year.

First staged in Sunderland in 2009, the race was relocated to Gateshead and takes competitors through some of the North East’s most iconic landmarks, including Sage Gateshead, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge before crossing the finish line at the Gateshead International Stadium track.

The 10k welcomed 200 Gurkha recruits to the event for the first time in 2012. The soldiers completed the run as part of their British Army training, and they are now a fixture of the Simplyhealth Great North 10K, making the annual trip from Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire to take part.

Kerry Simpson, communications manager at The Great Run Company, spoke of the event’s progress throughout the years: “The last decade has seen the Great North 10K go from strength to strength. It is now firmly established on the North East's sporting events calendar.

Kerry continued: “It is a must-do event for many of those training for the Simplyhealth Great North Run in September. We're looking forward to seeing thousands of people celebrate as they cross the finish line inside Gateshead International Stadium this July.”
