Cyclists V Harriers

Wheels V Legs

Two wheels or two legs, which is faster over five miles?

Irvine Running Club has plans for the 64th edition of the novel Cyclists V Harriers event where cyclists race against runners on the grounds of the Marress Sports Club and on Irvine Moor. You may have your thoughts on who is faster, but this is a race that truly puts it to the test!

The race was started in 1959 by Willie Fulton, a member of both Irvine Athletic Club and Fullarton Cycling Club. A spokesperson said: "This year is the 100th anniversary of the running club and every effort is being made to ensure the event is a success. In keeping with the spirit of the event there will be festive prizes for the category winners and also many spot prizes."

The 2024 edition will take place on Sunday 8 December and will see cyclists pitted against runners on a five-mile course across soft ground, starting and finishing at Irvine Sports Club. The route itself, which follows paths around the club and the town as well as a cross-country section over Irvine Moor, will be strewn with obstacles, to make the challenge as fair as possible.

There will be changing, toilet, and shower facilities available in the Sports Club after the race and as a reward for everyone's hard work there will be post-race tea, coffee and soup on offer.
