Tom Scott Winners Lineup

Simpson Storms To Victory At Tom Scott 10 Miler

Fast times and a course record to boot, at the weekend's Tom Scott Memorial Races...

The 58th Tom Scott Memorial Races took place at the weekend (Sunday 3 April) and saw close to 400 runners congregate at Strathclyde Country Park to take part in one of the race calendar's most popular and fastest events.

The Motherwell event comprises the iconic 10 mile race and a shorter Round the Loch 6K. Both races boast fast, flat routes on the paths around the Strathclyde Park loch. The 10-mile race also served as the Scottish 10-Mile Championships meaning that the field boasted some of Scottish distance running’s best.

Whilst the location and indeed the route have changed over the years, one constant is that the event has attracted some of Scotland's very best distance runners. Scottish Olympians, to European contenders and Commonwealth Gold and Silver medalists have all won the event over the years.

This year the womens winner was Annabel Simpson of University West Of Scotland who stormed round the loch bagging a new course record with a time of 54:10, second female was Fionnuala Ross of Shettleston Harriers in 00:56:36 and third was Virginie Barrand of Metro Aberdeen in 00:57:53.

Winner in the mens race was Jonny Glen of Inverclyde AC in 00:49:44, he was followed by Michael Christoforou of Cambuslang in 00:50:38 and third place was won by Dougie Selman of Corstorphine in 00:50:48.

Special mention must also go to Stephen Wylie of Cambuslang Harriers, who became the first male athlete to win both the Tom Scott trophy for first place and the Jackie Gourlay Shield for first Vet 50+. This year he ran an excellent 54:49 mins to win the over 50 prize which was a fine effort.

Race organisers commented on Facebook: "Thank you to everyone who joined us today! It goes without saying that we're very appreciative for all those who, year-on-year, travel to Strathclyde Park to take part. Nearly 400 of you rocked up at the start line today, which is fantastic to see after the dent we all felt following two years of cancellations.

"We continue to be extremely heartened by your support, hopefully all those competing enjoyed the races and (fingers crossed) we can have you back with us in 2023."

The event was popular with first timers too, not just the elite, with Lisa Muirhead commenting on Facebook: "Today's ten miler was my first ever race and it totally exceeded my expectations. The volunteers were fantastic and everything was very well organised. Can't wait to repeat the experience in 2023! Thank you."
