Clacton Half Marathon medals 2024

Carnival Time In Clacton

Course record for defending champion Hannah McGowan-Jones...

There is something exhilarating about racing beside the English coastline. Salty sea breezes, busy promenades, bright lights, and smiling faces everywhere seem to add a special atmosphere and distract runners from the usual discomforts of competition.

Clacton Carnival Half Marathon and 10K, on Sunday 18 August 2024, is a good example of the genre with the added extra of this being the concluding event in the annual Clacton Carnival. With Clacton Carnival drawing in the crowds and the Clacton-on-Sea Promenade looking its best with bunting, this is the place for a fast and exciting race experience.

Sussex-based Nice Work race management headed to the Essex Sunshine Coast to support the Clacton Carnival Committee with the arrangements. The joint organisers were rewarded with more than 650 finishers evenly distributed between both distances.

Wayne De'ath (Project Run Crew) was back to attempt to win the Clacton Carnival Half Marathon for the third successive year but came up against a determined James Davis (Vale of Aylesbury AC, 1:15:23). M40 master De'ath was second (1:17:08) and George Clancy (Victoria Park & Tower Hamlets AC, 1:20:14) was third male in fourth place overall.

Finishing in the elevated position of third overall was the winner of the women's race, Hannah McGowan-Jones (Thurrock Harriers, 1:19:38 PB) – a 36:03 10K runner who won this year's Brighton Marathon in 2:54:43. McGowan-Jones retained her 2023 title and improved her course record. W40 Karen Pickering (Halstead RRC, 1:29:49) and W50 Carolyn Hay (Mansfield Harriers, 1:30:19) were the runners-up.

There were 330 finishers in the half marathon in 3:23:11 and 324 completed the 10K in less than two hours. The top three men were Jordan Thomson (37:12), Tom Newton (37:31) and Flynn Eyre (Great Bentley RC, 37:58).

Rachel Rising (Halstead RRC, 38:56), Daisy Brooke (Ipswich Jaffa RC, 39:07) and Emma Mortimer (Ipswich Phoenix RC, 40:29) were all in the top ten overall as they formed the women's podium.
