Romsey Relay Marathon start 2018

Divide And Conquer Romsey Marathon

So you have completed numerous parkruns and people keep talking about something called the marathon. You are tempted but it seems like a heck of a long way on your own. What you need is a few friends and the Barratt Homes Romsey Relay Marathon is ready to be conquered!

Last month's record breaking sixth Romsey Relay Marathon drew 130 teams and an estimated 3,000 people to Broadlands Estate beside the River Test for the annual Rotary Relay Marathon on Sunday, 13 May.

Bright sunshine contributed towards an almost 40% increase in participation in this charity event, which has raised more than £300,000 for worthy causes since its inception in 2013.

For the third successive year Barratt Homes sponsored the event that saw teams of up to 10 run two laps of a 1.3-mile course before passing the baton to the next team member. Runners have been aged 8 to 80 years and the fully inclusive event caters for all standards.

The 2018 winners and course record holders are Romsey Road Runners (pictured) who completed their 20 laps in 2:31:04 (5:46 per mile) followed by Ordnance Survey Runners (2:35:55) and Team Toby Express (2:48:42). Sponsors Barratt Homes made the top 40 with 3:33:32 and 130 teams finished inside five hours.

Event organiser, Charlie Daniel-Hobbs, of Rotary Club of Romsey said: “The Relay Marathon is not only a race but a major fundraising opportunity, a sound team building exercise and a family day out in a beautiful setting. Most importantly, it brings the whole community together to not only raise funds but also awareness of various charities serving Hampshire.”

You now have plenty of time to turn that parkrun conversation round towards a team effort for next year. After all, a marathon shared is a marathon halved (other fractions are available).
