Durham City Run Festival

Durham Open For Entries

Sign up today for some midsummer racing in the North East...

Runners are being invited to swap winter miles for midsummer racing as entries open for the 2026 Durham City Run Festival, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary this July. Organised by Events of the North in partnership with Durham County Council, the festival has become one of the region’s standout summer fixtures. The milestone edition promises the same electric atmosphere and iconic scenery that have helped make the event a favourite over the past decade.

The main races take place on the evening of Thursday 16 July, with runners choosing between a 5K and 10K through the historic streets of Durham. Both routes are undulating and begin outside the Radisson Blu Hotel before winding through the city centre, along the River Wear and past some of Durham’s best known landmarks. The finish line awaits at Palace Green, set against the spectacular backdrop of Durham Cathedral and Castle, part of the city’s UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Organisers say the midsummer evening setting adds a special feel to the event, with lively crowds and long daylight hours creating a festival atmosphere from start to finish. Whether tackling a first race or chasing a new personal best, participants can expect a memorable run in one of the North East’s most picturesque cities.

The celebrations continue on Saturday 18 July with the popular Families on Track event at Durham Racecourse, giving teams the chance to take part in a fun, relay style challenge designed for all ages and abilities.

All finishers in the 5K and 10K will receive a medal and goody bag, rounding off a landmark year as the Durham City Run Festival marks a decade of summer running in the city.
