Wimborne 10 start action

Retro Racing In Dorset

Wimborne 10 brings the Dorset Road Race League towards its conclusion...

Wimborne 10 is one of those 'under the radar' events that are the backbone of club road running. The distance is old school 10 miles; the course is far from flat, and numbers are collected on race day from a green and white striped marquee on Pamphill Village Green.

Organisation is in the capable and experienced hands of Wimborne Athletic Club, with Event Chip Timing managing the results. Typically, there are 500 runners, and despite the hilly route, the best times are impressive at 49:26 by Abdinaasir Mohamoud Elmi (Bournemouth AC) in 2024 and 56:49 by Gemma Turtle (Gloucester AC) in 2009, with a £250 prize for breaking either course record.

All finishers receive a race memento, water, and free tea and cake. Additionally, male runners who run below 60 minutes and females under 70 minutes are awarded a special T-shirt. This year's Wimborne 10 on Sunday 16 November saw 451 finishers in 2:34:44. There were 32 men in line for a commemorative T-shirt; 10 women also met the required standard.

The course record bonuses went unclaimed, although Jonathan Cornish's victory in 50:45 was in the vicinity. Cornish, the 2023 champion and second last year, was representing his first-claim club Hercules Wimbledon AC, but wearing his Poole AC vest.

Poole AC still aced the team event without their talisman as Jamie Grose (52:56) and Tom Corbin (53:45) were the runners-up, and Dom Willmore (54:11) completed the scoring trio in fifth place behind Christian Green (Wells City Harriers, 53:56).

Wimborne AC were delighted home team winners, with Abbie Hine (8th) setting a club record 1:08:08. However, the top three were from three different clubs. Collecting the individual awards on the finish line were Isabel Zanconato (Purbeck Runners, 1:04:22), Emma Mogridge (Dorset Doddlers RC, 1:04:35) and Katie Gunn (Bournemouth AC, 1:04:56) who had the tidy gun time of exactly 65 minutes.

Wimborne 10 was the 11th race of 12 in the Dorset Road Race League 2025, which concludes on Sunday, 23 November with the Boscombe 10K.
