Enormous Elephant Run

Making A Difference This Weekend

With more than 2,000 charities expected to gain in excess of £50 million through the efforts of the 40,000 runners in Virgin Money London Marathon this year, we take a look at fundraising events in runABC South race listings this weekend.

The 2017 Virgin Money London Marathon raised £61.6 million for charity, making it the most successful annual one day charity event in the world for the 11th successive year. While these figures are simply staggering and highlight the largesse of the wider running community, there are opportunities every weekend to make a difference.

Cancer Research UK Race for Life Series is one of the best known charity events and there is a Pretty Muddy Run 5K version with messy obstacles and lots of fun at Basingstoke on Saturday (16 June). Down Grange Sports Centre is the venue for the latest event that also includes a Pretty Muddy Kids run, where the little ones can cover themselves in mud and glory.

There is a conventional Cancer Research UK Race for Life 5k at the same venue on Sunday for those women who prefer to stay spotless while raising a sweat and funds with their friends. You may not beat your PB but you certainly can help in beating cancer.

Don't be a Dumbo but get your trunks on for the Enormous Elephant Run at Clapham Common on Saturday. Whether you choose to wear the stylish elephant onesie or simply sport the face paint you will be part of the 'herd' raising awareness and vital funds to help keep Kenya's spectacular giants protected for future generations.

Also on Saturday you can Run for Diabetes in Royal Greenwich Park courtesy PB Race Events. With a 5K, 10K or Fun Run to choose from a donation from each entry will go direct to Young Diabetes Connections making this the simplest way to support any charity. Of course, this being Greenwich Park, the route will not be devoid of hills and is euphemistically described as being 'scenic'.

All these events are detailed in runABC South race listings brought to you in association with Sports Tours International. We would like to take this opportunity to salute everyone who is out there this weekend, making a difference in the community while enjoying their sport.
