Gunpowder, Treason & Trot
Two fantastic Yorkshire events celebrated one of England's most infamous characters at the weekend...
Two Yorkshire events went off with a bang at the weekend with both the Guy Fawkes 10 and Gunpowder Plot 10K making their return to the autumn race calendar. It was a case of remember, remember the 6th of November with both races taking place on Sunday and proving as popular as ever.
Organised by Nidd Valley Road Runners, the Guy Fawkes 10 takes place in Ripley and this year saw close to 800 toeing the line. The hilly 10 mile course takes runners through scenic Nidderdale and finishes in the stunning grounds of Ripley Castle.
James Eaton of Tadcaster Harriers was first home in a time of 57:33, while second place went to Tom Calvert of Knaresborough Striders in 58:04 and third place was claimed by Harrogate Harrier Ben Holmes in 58:45. In the women's race, Sally Armitage of Ilkley Harriers took first spot in a time of 1:03:48, with second place going to Hyde Park Harrier Amy Young in 1:05:38. Third place on the podium was taken by Heather Tuffs of Thirst & Sowerby Harriers in 1:07:59.
A popular event with club runners and recreational runners alike, Facebook was awash with enthusiastic comments post-race. Jan Bairstow said: "Absolutely loved my first time running Guy Fawkes 10. Well organised, fantastic support and loved the goodies. I’ve been giddy since I finished."
While Wendy Duggan said: "Thank you all so much from all at Valley Hill Runners, Sheffield and well done to all for another fantastic race. From start to finish it's so very well organised, the Marshalls are fabulous, banter on route is epic and the goodie bag n top are super. It keeps us coming back year on year. Perfect day. We loved the guy with the Trumpet, you couldn't help but smile, the music helped on those last couple of hills, along with the guy in the bright leggings. Awesome day!"
Elsewhere in Yorkshire, the Gunpowder Plot 10K was played out in York itself. The popular 10K takes runners on a two-lap route around York Knavesmire. This year saw close to 170 runners take part with the top spot claimed by Michael Keedy of Hambleton Athletics RC in a time of 37:53. The winner in the women's race was Yann Kai Oh in a time of 41:50.
Speaking after the event, organisers commented: "What an absolute cracker of a day! Well done to everyone who took part in today’s Gunpowder Plot 10K and Fun Run! The weather gods were clearly shining over us today. I actually heard complaints of it being too hot! We were surprised to hear that PB bell ringing so often. There were so many incredible runs today - well done everyone. Huge thanks to York Dungeon for releasing Guy Fawkes for the morning."
