Thousands get ready for Greater Manchester Marathon
Excitement is building ahead of Sunday’s (7 April) ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon as runners complete their final preparations. The fast, flat, PB course is one of several event highlights.
Around 20,000 runners will be taking part in this popular marathon that has become an annual fixture for many. From international and UK elites to people attempting the distance for the first time there is something to offer everyone, irrespective of age and ability.
Steve Way, Hayley Munn, Karl Welborn and Liz Abbott are amongst the home grown talent who will be toeing the line on Sunday. Joining them is Susannah Gill, the female World record holder for running 7 marathons in 7 days on 7 continents who has a Manchester PB in her sights. She is one of several speakers at the Marathon Eve Meet Up on Saturday (6 April), a friendly, relaxed gathering where runners can ask questions and/or pick up tips about marathon preparation.
There is the Mancunian Mile for youngsters and the not-so-young who will experience a big city race and the atmosphere that accompanies it. Spectators will cheer them on as they complete their mile and they will be rewarded with a medal for their efforts. There is also a relay option, open to teams of two or four for anyone not quite ready for the 26.2 mile distance.
Emirates Old Trafford, Lancashire County Cricket Club is the venue for the ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon and includes the Athletes Villages and The Hangout. The latter is where runners will celebrate their marathon triumphs with family and friends, showing off their chunky Manchester ‘M’ medal whilst relaxing to live music.
The action begins at 9am on Sunday 7 April.
