Celebrate Summer Solstice 2020 at the new Solstice24

Entries go live on Friday for Scotland’s newest 24-hour running event.

Solstice 24 will take place on the weekend of the summer solstice, 19–21 June 2020, at Knockburn Loch Sports Centre in Royal Deeside, Scotland, under the shadow of Kerloch Hill.

The 12-hour and 24-hour lapped trail race will follow a scenic marked route on a mixture of grass, gravel and moorland paths. One lap is 4.2 miles (6.7km) long with 100m of ascent, and participants are challenged to complete as many laps as possible in the given time.

Runners can either test their endurance to the maximum and compete in the solo category as they celebrate midsummer, or share the racing experience and physical strain within a team, which allows varied abilities to take part. Elite solo runners and teams are expected to complete 100 miles or more.

The 24-hour race will start at 10am on Saturday morning with the 12-hour race joining in at 10pm on Saturday evening.

Organisers Firetrail, who also put on the Illuminator Night Trail Race, say this arrangement will allow all competitors to run through the night and welcome the sunrise on the longest day of the year.

Race director Alexandra Lawes told runABC Scotland online: “There is a growing appetite for endurance running and we are excited to bring this format of ultra racing to Aberdeenshire. The course at Knockburn Loch is fantastic. Hopefully word will travel beyond Scotland and we can bring an international audience!”

The organisers certainly got the word out to the local running community in an illuminating way: Solstice24 was announced during a midnight group run up Scolty Hill. Local runner Steph Provan, who was on the run, said: “This is a great race format as it will allow competitive solo runners like me to race with the support they need, but groups of friends or work teams can also to take part. You don’t need to be an elite runner to take part. I think it will be a really popular addition to the local race calendar.”
