Runners At The Ashbourne 10

700 steam ahead at Ashbourne 10

There were smiles along with the miles and lots of PBs at the Ashbourne 10 (Sunday 3 March). The canine entrants also had a good day on the trails in Derbyshire.

Storm Freya played her part, holding off until the end of the third Ashbourne 10 hosted by SBR Events. With a choice of 5K, 10K and 10 miles, there was a race for every runner including the four legged variety! A staggered start saw the Canicross 10K and 10 mile head off at 9.30am followed by waves of runners (10K and 10 mile) with the fastest going first. The 5K Canicross/runners were the last to leave.

They followed an out and back course that took them along the Tissington Trail, the site of a former railway line linking Ashbourne with Buxton. This continued into the Derbyshire Dales featuring a climb for the first half followed by a downhill section in the second half while surrounded by stunning countryside.

In the 10 Mile, Jack Chennell of Higham Harriers was the winning man in 59:21; Jamie Whittaker of Erewash Valley RC was the winning lady in 1:09:24.

Martyn Taylor won the 10K in 38:58; Claire Thompson of Vale Royal AC was the first female in 45:35.

Oliver Brocklehurst of Matlock AC sped to victory in the 5K in 19:10; Steph Spencer of Derby AC was the fastest female in 22:20.

There were certificates for all the entrants with extra ‘paw prints’ for those who took part in the Canicross category. The bespoke medal was voted a winner as were the free photos and post-race massages that rounded off a perfect day for many.
