Run The Blades
This unique trail event makes its return in July this year...
Whitelee Wind Farm is a great place to visit regardless of the time of year, with its dramatic landscape, epic views and of course, the majestic windmills themselves which are mesmerising to watch. If you fancy running alongside these giant structures, then take note that Run the Blades is back for 2023, and organisers are billing it as 'bigger and better than ever.'
Run The Blades has grown to become one of the largest trail running events in the UK and is a unique event held exclusively within the UK’s largest onshore wind farm which is just a 20 minute drive from the centre of Glasgow. Incorporating three distances – a 10K, half marathon and 50K ultramarathon – the event makes trail running accessible to runners of all fitness and experience levels. The event is an ideal step up from road to trail, offering hard-packed yet challenging terrain. Whether you’re looking to record a new personal best, or you’re keen to sign up for your first trail run, look no further.
The 10K race is up first on Friday (14 July) and is described as a perfect introduction to trail running around a relatively easy but rolling route. You’ll be hard pushed to find a 10K near Glasgow with scenery as good as this.
On Saturday (15 July) it is the turn of the ultra runners with the 50K race taking centre stage, this event bridges the gap between marathon and the longer ultras and offers competitors the opportunity to step up from road marathon to ultra trail running.
The Half Marathon is set for Sunday (16 July) and will prove a fantastic challenge for anyone looking to step up from the 10K distance. New for 2023, a junior event is also planned, meaning that under 16s can finally join in the Run the Blades community.
