Northumberlands Big 10 Miler 2026

Ten Miles And No Shortage Of Competition At Matfen

The Run Northumberland BIG 10 Miler returns on 29 November, bringing club runners and independent entrants together for a 10 mile road race around Matfen...

Ten miles might be an unusual distance on today's crowded running calendar, but in Northumberland it remains a popular challenge for club runners and those who simply fancy something beyond the usual 10K.

The Run Northumberland BIG 10 Miler takes place on Sunday 29 November, with the organiser describing it as the North East's largest race over the distance.

Based around the village of Matfen, the event uses a two lap road course through the surrounding countryside. Runners familiar with the organiser's Matfen 10K will recognise the area, although the BIG 10 Miler avoids some of that race's hills.

That doesn't mean ten miles of effortless running. The course is officially described as undulating, with enough changes in gradient to keep runners working throughout.

There is a competitive tradition here too. The organiser lists Martin Barwood's 56:00 from 2014 as the men's course record, while Sarah Benson's 60:29 from 2013 remains the women's benchmark.

Last year's winners were Conrad Franks of Gateshead in 57:08 and Judith Nutt of Elswick in 64:37, demonstrating the quality of running this event continues to attract.

With an entry limit of 300, the BIG 10 Miler is a considerably smaller affair than the major city road races. Individual, age category and club team prizes give competitive runners plenty to aim for, while the distance provides a satisfying late autumn target for everyone else.

Entries remain open for the 2026 race, with the start scheduled for 10:00am.

For anyone who enjoys traditional road racing without the crowds of a major half marathon, Matfen has ten miles waiting.
