Paula's Families On Track Launch Newcastle

Families On Track Heads To Tyneside

Paula Radcliffe’s family athletics initiative to make Tyneside debut this summer...

Athletics legend Paula Radcliffe will bring her innovative family athletics initiative to Tyneside for the first time in the summer. Paula’s Families on Track will provide the finale for this year’s TRY on the Tyne multi-sports event in Newcastle and Gateshead on Saturday 13 August. It will take over Baltic Square on a specially enclosed course for participants of all ages.

Launched in 2019, Paula’s Families on Track gives family teams the opportunity to work together to complete 10K in a relay, all on a safe, enclosed course. Teams of between three and five of all generations take part in an inclusive event that puts the emphasis on fun. The 2022 TRY on the Tyne will bring senior and junior duathlons and a 5K run to the Newcastle and Gateshead quaysides.

Paula visited Tyneside this week to inspect the venue for Families on Track along with her children Isla and Raphael and other families who plan to take part in August. She commented: “Families on Track has been a huge hit wherever we’ve taken it and I am really excited about its potential on Tyneside. The setting is going to be spectacular and we aim to provide a brilliant finale to this year’s TRY on the Tyne.

“The inspiration for Families on Track came from those closest to me, so it was great to have Isla and Raphael with me to look at our latest venue. We want to use the event to encourage many more families to get fit and active together and I’m sure that we’re going to succeed in an area that’s so passionate about its sport.”

Mayor of Gateshead, Cllr Dot Burnett, added: "We’re delighted to see the return of TRY on the Tyne this year and look forward to welcoming even more competitors to Gateshead. With the addition of the new Families on Track the event is set to be even bigger for 2022 and it’s fantastic that the whole family can come together and compete as a team this year.

“This is an amazing opportunity for all participants to take in some of Gateshead’s most iconic sights, including Gateshead Millennium Bridge, as they race along the banks of the Tyne. Events such as these are a great way of getting more people excited about sport and I’d encourage everyone to get behind the event, whether they are taking part or spectating, and show their support.”
