Pay Attention Men

Unique event raises awareness and funds for prostate and testicular cancer

The forthcoming Bank Holiday weekend provides extra racing opportunities for us all and the weather finally looks like it will be playing ball with temperatures in excess of 20C predicted in the South.

Race for Men is an event that caught our eye as we scanned the comprehensive runABC South events listing. Based at Hudson's Field, Salisbury (SP1 3SA) there will be a remarkable day of family fun and entertainment on Sunday 28 May, running alongside the main Race For Men events, with a choice of 3K, 5K, 10K, or Half Marathon held on part tarmac, part trail courses.

The obvious highlight of the running route is a visit to the ancient Old Sarum Hill Fort from the southern ramparts, from where there are fine views of the City of Salisbury, which in 2023 is 804 years old after the new Cathedral moved from Old Sarum.

For sports enthusiasts, there is a five-a-side football competition. Alternatively, if you prefer something a little more relaxed, the inflatable castle and assault course will provide plenty of fun and entertainment for children and adults alike.

The main stage will feature live performances from a line-up of talented musicians, including The Deloreons, Signature Vision, Duncan Heather, Panatical, and Disco Dion. So, you can dance the day away to some great tunes and soak up the lively atmosphere while your running mad family members are doing their thing.

Food, drink, and a licensed bar are available and the whole event is held in support of the Stars Appeal Prostate Fund. Race for Men has so far raised more than £47,000 for prostate and testicular cancer amongst men and for related services in Salisbury.

Recent figures from Cancer Research UK indicate that more than 52,000 men are diagnosed each year, and 78% of those diagnosed live more than 10 years post-diagnosis but sadly more than 12,000 deaths occur. Better outcomes for men diagnosed with prostate cancer are what this event is all about.

The unique atmosphere of the event can be seen in this short video...
