The Portobello Beach Race is a 4 mile beach race held on the sands of Portobello Beach in Edinburgh. Timed to coincide with low tide, the Scottish Athletics licensed event follows an out and back course entirely on sand, with a Kids' Fun Run also taking place on race day.
Starting on the beach below Towerbank Primary School, the route heads east towards Joppa before turning back along the full length of the beach towards the Cat and Dog Home. Runners then return to the original start area to finish, creating a distinctive seaside course where the changing tide and beach conditions add an extra challenge.
The Portobello Beach Race offers a different test from a traditional road or trail race, with firm sand, coastal scenery and the atmosphere of one of Edinburgh's best known beaches. Organised by Portobello Running Club, the event also raises funds to support Towerbank Primary School and other local good causes.
