The Pennine Journey long-distance footpath traverses some of the most delightful terrain that Northern England has to offer. In 2022, organisers plan to bring you the whole 247 miles and 37,000 feet of ascending joy, but over two events: The North and South Loops. In 2023, organisers plan to hold the main event: a foot race around the whole loop!

The 2022 North Loop 104-mile Ultramarathon starts at the medieval village of Blanchland. Shortly after, by way of Hexham with its magnificent Abbey, Hadrian’s Wall is reached – Alfred Wainwright’s 1938 objective. The route follows probably the best 20 miles of this World Heritage Site, with opportunities to delve into the history of the Roman occupation of Britain, particularly at Housesteads.

From the ruins of Thirlwall Castle, near Greenhead, the route heads south, initially along the River South Tyne to Alston, before climbing over the shoulder of Cross Fell, the highest point in England outside of Alfred Wainwright’s beloved Lakeland Fells. The Eden valley is followed to its source before the route joins the Pennine Way and climbs over High Cup Nick towards Ettersgill, then continues north into Weardale, before returning to Blanchland.

The 50-mile option (51ish) starts at the market town of Alston and follows the same route as the 100 back to Blanchland. We will provide you with race support approximately every 10-12 miles. 50-mile runners can have one drop bag, and 100-mile runners two.

The route is permanently waymarked, but entrants are expected to be able to use a map and compass as well as illustrating some hill experience.
