Ultra running in the North is set to reach new extremes with the launch of the North Star Ultra, a formidable challenge from Cold Brew Events. The team behind events such as the SCOTT Cheviot Goat and the Pilgrims Ultra is now raising the bar even higher with an event designed to test the toughest endurance athletes.

The North Star Ultra will make its debut on 13 June and asks runners to cover up to 200 miles of trail running within a strict 36 hour time limit. Centred on Kielder Castle, the course sends competitors out to five points that form the shape of a star, with each leg offering its own unique character and difficulty. Runners must first complete the northern leg to Carter Bar, after which the remaining four legs can be tackled in any order.

The route reaches out to Falstone, Stonehaugh, Byrness and Newcastleton, creating a star shaped network of trails that showcases the landscapes of Northumberland and the Scottish Borders. Organisers say the event reflects their commitment to supporting eco tourism in rural areas of the North East, building on the positive impact already generated by their existing races.

The event can be attempted solo or as part of a team of two or four, with overall standings determined by total distance covered. For solo runners, simply completing all legs within the time limit would be an extraordinary achievement. Team entries add a tactical dimension, as only one runner may be out on the course at any given time, with all changeovers taking place at Kielder Castle.

With entries now open, it is expected to attract runners eager to discover just how far they can push themselves over 36 hours in one of the most ambitious endurance events the region has seen.
