Martin and Cathy Burke of Nice Work

Nice Work if you can get it!

One of Britain's most experienced and prolific race organisers Nice Work has been extremely busy trying to reschedule dozens of cancelled races and contacting thousands of entrants to explain their options.

Nice Work is a family-owned business that started organising races in 1989 – more than 30 years ago. Their event portfolio now features more than 240 races nationwide. Martin and Cathy Burke (pictured above) head the company, which is based in Peasmarsh, East Sussex.

Communication is key during these difficult days and Nice Work are keeping it real rather than going fully down the virtual run route. Their plan is to postpone as many races as possible to give runners the opportunity to take part in their favourite events later this year.

The big question – apart from staying safe during an unprecedented global pandemic – is what will happen to pre-paid entry fees? Nice Work has announced a flexible scheme, with options to suit most people.

The sudden close down of all licensed running events, firstly until 30 April but then extended to the end of May, presented major logistical challenges and considerable losses were incurred for supplies, T-shirts and medals, hotels for staff, licences and insurance, timing chips, location costs and race packs that had already been sent for some races.

Nice Work's solution is to offer every entrant a 'triple choice' of transfer to the rescheduled event later this year; free deferral to next year’s race or a free race credit to any Nice Work wholly managed event in 2020, if spaces are available, or throughout the whole of 2021.

Martin Burke posted this message for the legion of Nice Work regular supporters: “These remain difficult times for everybody and, like most of the country, we are concerned for friends, family, staff, volunteers and participants. We will survive this crisis and we can also assure you that all of our races will survive. We have been overwhelmed not just by the support from runners but also by the kindness shown to our team. Your continued support is heart-warming and your agreement to work with us by transferring or deferring race places will, we promise, be rewarded”.
