New runs for New Deer

Hot on the heels of the new Buchan Trail Marathon at Aden Country Park and the Formartine & Buchan Railway 12 Hour Ultra, another new event is being launched in the North East this year.

The inaugural New Deer Fun Run, which will feature 5k, 10k and kids races, will be held on Sunday, 17 May. The new event has been organised to raise funds for the charity Aberdeen Foyer and other local causes.

The 5k and 10k runs – the 10k being two laps of the course – will both start and finish at the All Weather Facility at New Deer, and take in the village itself as well as its surrounding landmarks.

The route will head out on local trails for the first 2k and then enter the grounds of the New Deer Show. Runners will then head up towards the highest point of the course: the Culsh Monument.

Organisers note that the journey up – or two journeys up in the case of the 10k – is ‘is not for the faint hearted’. They say: ‘There is a serious climb to the top but the views are more than worth it. From this point onwards it is downhill all the way, along the high street and back to the start.’

The 10k run is restricted to the over 18s; the 5k run is open to all ages, but parents/guardians are responsible for any under 18s. Sections of the course are on open public roads and for this reason organisers request that all under 13s are accompanied by an adult. Similarly, due to the uneven terrain and in the interests of safety, pushchairs are not allowed on the routes.

Online entries close on 15 May, or when sold out. The 5k and 10k events are each limited to 100 participants; limited entries may be available on the day, even if the race appears sold out online.
