Match made in heaven at NYD Leamington parkrun
There were two causes for celebration at yesterday's New Year’s Day (1 January) Leamington parkrun. The first was a record turnout and the second was a marriage proposal by Jason Jackson who used a barcode wristband to pop the question to Natalie Dellar.
905 runners were at the New Year’s Day Leamington event, the biggest attendance in their history and an impressive start to 2020 and the new decade. The large volume required extraordinary efforts by the volunteers who proved to be more than up to the task of ‘crowd control’.
It has become a tradition, starting the New Year with a parkrun and Leamington was one of many that hosted a special event. The fresh air and exercise also helped to ease the post-New Year’s Eve hangovers and in the company of like-minded individuals, some of whom had completed Stratford, Brueton Park or Rugby parkruns beforehand as part of a double.
There was a moment to remember the late Richard Minty, a popular and much missed regular at Leamington parkrun who passed away on New Year’s Day 2019.
Then at 10.30am everyone was sent on their way from the football pavilion at Newbold Comyn and along the summer route - only for this day and for safety reasons at the finish. The large influx of runners/walkers meant the funnel managers were busier than usual but they along with the rest of the 47 volunteers coped admirably in what was a smooth operation from start to finish.
Chris Stanford of Warrington Triathlon Club was first male in 17:31. Georgie Campbell of Stratford-upon-Avon AC was first female in 19:17.
Jason Jackson finished in 30:54; Natalie Dellar in 35:00.
Happy New Year!
