Superheroes Launch Sunderland City Runs

Join the Superheroes at 10th Sunderland City Runs

A team of real life superheroes want people to be part of the 10th birthday celebrations of the Sunderland City Runs on 9 and 10 May. There is a choice of four distances, a sea front route and plenty of support at the big running festival in the region.

Organised by Events of the North in partnership with Sunderland City Council, this fun-filled weekend has something for everyone irrespective of age, background or ability. Sunderland City Runs invites members of the public to get involved in this festival which is also the culmination of the STEP UP campaign to make the city an active one.

The Sunderland Superheroes will be there, taking part in the races and promoting the physical and mental benefits of running for all. While this squad may not be able to fly, have spider-like powers or drive a batmobile they demonstrate the same levels of courage, determination and desire to help others.

This motivational team include Colin Burgin-Plews or ‘Big Pink Wonder Woman’; Sandra Dorman, Scott Baker, Dominic Lavelle, June Hindmarch, Darren Tate, George Harden, Deb Howell-Smith, Stephanie Hutchinson and Michelle and Paul Mustard. These athletics volunteers, charity fundraisers and people who run while dealing with a serious illness were nominated by the public at the end of 2019 and all these individual have been given a free place at one of the races.

The weekend starts with the 5K on Saturday, with the Half Marathon, 10K and BIG 3K the following day. The courses will have Mile or KM markers and water/isotonic stations and every runner who finishes will receive a medal, technical T-shirt and goody bag.
