Ben Evans On His Way To Winning The Burton 10 Mile

Iron Ben Wins At Burton

Ben Evans triumphed at Sunday’s (20 May) emotionally charged Burton 10 Mile Road Race. He and the second placed finisher showed that age is just a number.

The hot weather didn’t stop the Tamworth AC runner and Ironman from winning this 10-miler in 58:44. Having had to settle for second place at the recent Uttoxeter Half Marathon, won by Carl Moulton, Ben went one better this time and claimed the top spot with a strong display of running.

Gordy Smith was second in 59:44 with only one second separating him and Stephen Hill of Vegan Runners UK, third in 59:45. Evans and Smith are veterans (VM40), proving that mature athletes still have a turn of speed.

Veleska Wills of Derby AC won the women’s race in 67:06 beating her teammate Chrissie Dover into second place in 69:55. Jenny Laing of South Derbyshire Road Runners was third in 70:20. South Derbyshire Road Runners won the team event for the third year in a row.

New for this year was the Michael Kelsall Family Fun Run in tribute to a popular and much respected coach at Burton AC. Michael passed way suddenly in February and his wife Judy, also a member of Burton AC helped to organise the fun run along with the 10-miler to great success. James Stretton and Maisie Trueman were the male and female winners of this special event.

It was a smoothly run affair from Burton AC with thanks going to The Derby Runner for their continuing support, Ken Rushton for his professional commentary and the volunteers for their time and efforts.
