Hel n Back starts and finishes at Hermitage Academy in Helensburgh and offers a challenging trail race through the surrounding hills. The route is mainly made up of land rover tracks and well-made trails, with short sections of pavement and road. The course features four climbs, including a steep and short final ascent through the trees. After around 8K, the route becomes predominantly downhill, with the final 4K offering a fast, flowing descent towards the finish.
The race is well supported by friendly marshals throughout and offers impressive views in good weather. There is free parking at the school, with additional street parking nearby, while Craigendoran railway station is around five minutes' walk from the start. Fun prizes are awarded at the finish.
The climbs come in four parts with the last one through the trees being both the steepest and shortest. At around 8km you are all downhill to the finish. There is a short downhill between the second and third climb to allow your legs a wee break. With the last 4km being downhill on a good gradient you can let go and enjoy the route to the finish.
