Be Great In The South

The Great South Run is back – good weather ordered – time to secure your place...

After a wet, windy, and pretty wild AJ Bell Great South Run last year, the organisers have put their order in for more benign conditions for this year's edition of the nation's favourite 10-mile road race on Sunday, 18th October 2026!

Entries are now open for the 36th AJ Bell Great South Run, where runners will celebrate 100 years of Portsmouth’s city status. The Great South Run returns to Southsea and Portsmouth with its trademark mix of fast running, historic scenery, and unforgettable seaside atmosphere.

The Great South Run is one of the most popular 10-mile events in Europe, with 30,000 runners expected, and it's easy to see why. With a flat, fast course, glorious sea views and exceptional crowd support that lifts runners from start to finish, it's no wonder runners return year after year.

The race starts and finishes at Avenue de Caen in Southsea, a premier location for coastal attractions, positioned directly next to Clarence Pier amusement park, Southsea Common, and the seafront. Key nearby attractions include family rides at Clarence Pier, the historic Southsea Castle, The D-Day Story museum, and the Blue Reef Aquarium, all within walking distance.

The spectacular route takes in some of Portsmouth’s best-known landmarks, such as Portsmouth Harbour, the Historic Dockyard, and the HM Naval Base at Portsea, with some of the best South Coast scenery to enjoy along the way.

Portsmouth’s legendary supporters will keep your spirits high with music, a cheering crowd, and motivational messages, all part of the Great South Run experience. Whether you’re chasing a new PB, raising money for a cause close to your heart, or simply soaking up that unbeatable South Coast energy, this is an event that appeals equally to first-timers, charity fundraisers, and experienced club athletes chasing personal bests.

This year’s race forms part of a full Great South Run weekend on 17th-18th October, with the AJ Bell Great South 5K and Junior and Mini events also returning on Saturday, 17th October. With an iconic route and the backing of Portsmouth’s famously enthusiastic crowds, the AJ Bell Great South Run remains one of the autumn’s must-do events. Early entry is strongly advised if you want to be part of this celebrated South Coast running weekend.
