Some races measure their success in thousands of finishers. In Ashington, a hundred runners, a woodland course and a table full of homemade cakes are more than enough to make Christmas special. The Fell 'Em Doon Festive 5K returns on Sunday 13 December, continuing a popular tradition created by Ashington Hirst Running Club.

The Northumberland club stages two public races each year, with its summer Woodland 5 Miler and December Festive 5K both making use of Ashington Community Woods. The Christmas event is deliberately small, with entries limited to 100 runners and places traditionally disappearing quickly.

The course follows two laps of established woodland paths, with a flat profile and firm surfaces making it accessible to runners of different abilities. Experienced club athletes can enjoy a competitive 5K, while newer runners will find a friendly introduction to racing, supported by marshals throughout the route.

And then there are the famous Fell 'Em Doon goody bags. Every finisher receives a medal, a commemorative gift and a selection of treats. The club has also maintained entry prices at their 2024 level, with £1 from every place going directly to the Friends of Ashington Woods.

The community contribution extends beyond the entry fee. Runners and volunteers are encouraged to bring food donations for Ashington Life Centre, while a charity cake stall raises additional funds for good causes. It's a tradition that reflects the club's roots in the town and its commitment to making running a positive force locally.

With just 100 places available and no entries on race day, anyone hoping to join the festive gathering would be wise to plan ahead. You can secure your place now through the runABC Race Hub.
