Fast Start To 2018 For Eilish
Eilish McColgan has began 2018 with victory and a new 10k PB. The Scottish runner won the 10k at the Ooredoo event in Doha in a personal best time of 31.53 minutes.
It was a dominant performance from the 27-year-old who finished more than eight minutes ahead of her nearest rival. Fellow Brits Rosie Brookes (4th), Michelle Grainger (7th) and Nicola Milan (9th) ensured there would be four UK runners in the top 10.
Third overall in the mixed race, McColgan produced the performance off the back of a training camp in Qatar, where her mother and coach is based. She surpassed her 10k best by three seconds – a record set in the same event in 2017.
The half marathon saw Chris Thompson put in an impressive display to take third place. Thomson clocked 1:03:03 in a race won by Kenya’s Alex Kibet in 1:01:53, fellow Kenyan Benard Korir took second with a time of 1:02:07. In finishing third Thompson managed to get the better of the likes of Ayad Lamdassem, Abdi Abdirahman and Commonwealth Games marathon champion Michael Shelley. Mo Farah was due to run in the half-marathon event but reportedly pulled out with an Achilles issue.
In the women’s race Gemma Steel (Nuttall) went one better with a runner-up finish, crossing the line in 1:12:37.
