Eddie Narbett burns rubber to set Castle Combe record
DB Max Events welcomed 135 runners to a COVID-secure venue for the Melksham Town FC 10K
With Lockdown 3.0 kicking in from midnight on Monday (4 January) very few live events took place last weekend but DB Max Events' promotion of the Melksham Town FC 10K sneaked in just under the radar on Sunday (3 January).
The COVID-secure race was moved from its usual course through Melksham town centre to the venue for the Castle Combe 'Chilly' 10K at the famous old motor racing circuit five miles northwest of Chippenham.
The route was modified from the normal 'Chilly' 10K and competitors started on the perimeter of the race track in waves of six runners every 60 seconds, before joining the smooth tarmac circuit for 2.5 laps of fast, traffic-free racing.
This was a quality event won by Eddie Narbett, of Team Bath and Edinburgh University, in 30:15 – a Castle Combe course record. This would seem to be Eddie's road 10K debut and follows his 14:37 5K PB in Fife last November. Also burning rubber in Eddie's wake was James Bellward (RAF, 30:23) and Peter Bains (Bristol &West, 32:54 PB) was third.
The top trio in the women's race was the unattached Kate Forster (37:18), Emily Pitcher (Emersons Green RC, 40:37) and Gemma Knudsen (Avon Valley Runners, 40:44). The top 30 were inside 40 minutes; nearly 80 beat 50 minutes and there were 135 finishers in 1:14:16.
In last month's Castle Combe 'Chilly' 10K there were 278 finishers in 1:25:55 and the winners were Matthew Rees (Swansea Harriers, 31:22) and Freya Spruit (Team Bath, 39:13) – so the leading performances at last Sunday's Melksham Town FC 10K were superior.

The iRUN January medal is awarded to anyone running for 15 days or more, or for a total of 80 kilometres (50 miles) completed within the month. There will be further monthly challenges with bespoke medals to collect (hopefully not too many)!
