Too wintry for London Winter Run!
“At the time of runABC South going to press there is only a minor chance the event will have to be postponed”, said our preview of London's coolest 10K that was published before the potential adverse effects of storm Ciara forced the cancellation of Cancer Research UK London Winter Run 10K announced at 17:11 hours on Friday 7 February.
What greater irony could there be than London's Winter Run being stopped by the winter weather – especially when the event's mission statement is to 'help freeze cancer in its tracks'.
The official announcement on the race website reads: “We are so sorry to announce that Sunday’s Cancer Research UK London Winter Run has been cancelled. Due to the current weather forecast and predicted consequences of storm Ciara, we were not able to guarantee the safety of our runners, crew and volunteers. We are sure you share our disappointment and frustration and we apologise for any inconvenience caused. This really was a last resort. Please allow us a few days to complete the necessary admin. You are entitled to a refund. We will update you with further details about this by 5pm on Wednesday 12th February”.
So with up to 25,000 runners left without a race and unknown numbers out of pocket due to travel and accommodation arrangements that could not be refunded – some of whom were already in the capital for the event – was there an avalanche of complaints?
Not a bit of it. What a resilient and forgiving bunch you runners are. We have been moved by more than 1,500 comments posted on the official event facebook page and impressed by the individual responses given by the organisers to all those who left messages of support.
We particularly loved Alan Fletcher's post: “Gutted, we had trains and a hotel booked to come down from Manchester today, we were looking forward to this one! Can't be helped, safety first, looking forward to the virtual one and please donate my entry fee to charity. I hope others will do the same. P.S.: Bring this event back to Manchester Etihad for 2021 – torrential rain and hurricane winds up here is just called a Tuesday...”!
CRUK has announced that any entrant who runs 10K (or more) in a run between 8th and 16th February can still claim their coveted Winter Run 10K medal. Simply upload electronic proof using any tracking app and complete the #InYourOwnTime form here to claim.
