Burnley Bursts Into Life For Annual 10K

Burnley saw top race action on Sunday (15 July) when over 1100 competitors took part in the Run For All organised event. The sixth staging saw its two quickest finishes as Salford Harriers’ Thomas Cornthwaite grabbed top place in 32:32, while Pauline Powell (38:16) was first in the female competition in. Both times represented course records.

The field departed Towneley Park and began on a course that took them along Todmorden Road and onto Belvedere Road, in the shadow of Turf Moor, before moving into Thompson Park and leading to a grand finish back where the race had started.

Many of the day’s participants were raising money for a good cause of their own choice, or for one of the event’s partner charities - Jane Tomlinson Appeal, Macmillan Cancer Support, Pendleside Hospice, Burnley Leisure Trust, Every Action Has Consequences and Burnley FC in the Community.

Cornthwaite scored one of his biggest career victories to date in 32:32, over 30 seconds quicker than Morpeth Harriers’ Nick McCormick (33:08), while Barlick Fell Runners’ Marc Hartley took third in 34:55. Blackburn Harriers’ Powell was the convincing winner in the female competition in 38:16, with April Thorpe (41:32) and Sara Ridehalgh (41:51) her closest challengers.

Mandy Rivett, Co-ordinator of the Asda Foundation, said: “It was fantastic to see so many runners and spectators turn out at today’s Asda Foundation Burnley 10K to help raise thousands of pounds for a number of deserving causes. The level of support offered by everyone in Burnley today was a real credit to the people of the town and exactly what makes this event so special.”

Entry for the 2019 staging of the Asda Foundation Burnley 10K is now open.
