Lou says good luck to all at Brighton Half Marathon
The Grand Brighton Half Marathon is the pick of the action this weekend in the runABC South region. This will be the 29th year of Brighton Half Marathon, organised since its inception by The Sussex Beacon charity, formed to support people living with HIV and started with funds raised in the very first event in 1991.
There were more than 8,000 competitors in last year's programme and 7,813 completed the 13.1 mile event in just over five hours. The impressive results list for 2018 was topped by Ireland's Paul Pollock (Kent AC, 1:06:57), Paul Martelletti (Victoria Park and Tower Hamlets, 1:08:16) and Paul Whittaker (Road Runners Club, 1:08:34).
Izzy Coomber, from local club Lewes AC, took the honours in the women's race in 1:19:00 from W40 Sarah Bradbury (Farnham Runners, 1:19:47) and Emily Proto (Arena 80, 1:21:28). The leading 350 finishers were inside 90 minutes on this super-fast, seafront promenade course.
The full list of events includes the main half marathon and Sussex Beacon Relay Half Marathon for teams of four, each running just over 5k before passing the baton to the next runner. There is a wheelchair race within the half marathon and four Brighton Half Junior Races for children aged from 7–17 years.
Andrew Mosley, general manager of main sponsors the Grand Hotel, invites competitors with this message: “The Grand Brighton Half Marathon is not only a fantastic sporting event, but a tremendous occasion in the community that raises vital funds for a host of wonderful charities. It is a day to be enjoyed by runners, residents and visitors alike and we’re delighted to welcome you all once again in 2019”.
Vantage points include the start and finish on Madeira Drive, Brighton Marina, the iconic Brighton Pier and the attractive Hove Lawns and Hove Lagoon at the 10 mile point.
