The Boston Marathon is organised by the Boston Athletic Association and takes place each year on Patriots' Day in Massachusetts, USA. First held in 1897, it is the world's oldest annual marathon and one of the six Abbott World Marathon Majors, attracting elite athletes and qualifying runners from around the world.

The point to point course starts in Hopkinton and passes through Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley, Newton, Brookline and Boston before finishing on Boylston Street near Copley Square. The route is renowned for landmarks including the Wellesley College Scream Tunnel, the Newton Hills and the climb of Heartbreak Hill before the final miles into central Boston.

The Boston Marathon is internationally recognised for its qualifying standards, historic traditions and enthusiastic spectator support. Professional race organisation, extensive medical provision, official timing and a memorable finish on Boylston Street combine to make it one of the most prestigious and sought after marathons in the world.
