Big Kick Off For Major Sporting Event (The Tour Of Tameside)

While all eyes will be drawn to the commencement of the 2018 World Cup, another major sporting event (one that is far closer to home and arguably even more exciting) kicks off later this evening (Thursday 14 June).

The Tour of Tameside, organised by Sports Tours International, was founded by Dr. Ron Hill in 1983 was re-introduced in 2015 and quickly regained its reputation as one of the North West's most distinctive races.

As with the major football event starting this evening, the Tour will have an international flavour with participants from across the world taking part. In addition to club runners across the country, there will also be, among others, an Aussie competitor and group from Germany taking part—as we reported last week.

The Tour commences at 7.15pm tonight with the X-Trail 10K, which takes in two superb local country parks and a variety of terrain to test all levels of runners. Using routes within both Daisy Nook and Park Bridge Country Parks, the course is designed to take in some breathtaking views of the local landscape.

Tomorrow (Friday 15 June), competitors will move on to Stalybridge for the infamous Hell on the Fell Race. Runners are in for a steep climb over the six miles in what is probably the most challenging stage of the series.

Stage 3 takes place on Saturday (16 June) morning where runners will take on the 13.1 mile ‘Hero Half Marathon’ along the Longdendale Trail before the final day, Stage 4 on Sunday morning, when the Tour will finish with the classic Dr Ron Hyde 7 Mile. Formerly know as the Hyde 7, the concluding race is now named after the founding father of the Tour of Tameside.

runABC North will be following the events as they unfold over the next four days – keep an eye out for our updates and final race report.
