Ballot time at Great North Run

It’s that time of year again when the world’s largest half marathon opens its doors to hundreds of thousands of applications. The general entry ballot for the Simplyhealth Great North Run, scheduled for Sunday 8 September, is now open, with prospective registrants given just over a month to apply.

First staged in 1981, the GNR is a stand out fixture in the global racing calendar with over 40,000 runners taking part year on year. The iconic course takes in Tyne Bridge, goes through Gateshead passing the famous international athletics stadium and finishes in the coastal town of South Shields.

2018 saw Sir Mo Farah back to top form as he secured an unprecedented fifth consecutive victory at the South Shields event. Farah was composed as he claimed title number five in a time of 59:26, with Jake Robertson coming home in 59:57.

In the women’s competition, Vivian Cheruiyot made it two victories in three years after an exciting, Kenyan-dominated contest. Cheruiyot clocked 67:43, nine seconds ahead of Brigid Kosgei, with Joyciline Jepkosgei third in 68:10.

As ever, the number of applications is set to far outweigh the places available. You can enter the ballot here – you will receive notification, successful or otherwise, by Friday 8 February – good luck!
