Victory for Will Draper and Nia Rose Nokes at the 2023 Stafford Half Marathon

Draper And Nokes Champions At Stafford Half

Big wins for these two at popular local race with widespread support

It was a close finish between Will Draper and Chris Powner in the 2023 Stafford Half Marathon (Sunday 12 March) with a final burst on Victoria Road that saw Draper first across the line. There was an equally outstanding run from Nia Rose Nokes.

Conditions were dry and windy at the Stafford Half Marathon – a relief after the Arctic blast the last few days which has resulted in snow in and around Staffordshire. Thankfully, there were no such worries at Sunday’s event organised by Freedom Leisure where over 1,750 runners soaked up the course and atmosphere on a memorable day for all.

There was a new start and finish for this year’s race. Runners lined up according to their estimated finishing time on Greengate Street and into Tipping Street before setting off at 10am from Bridge Street. They followed a route around the county town with PB Pacers amongst the field, helping those towards their goal time. Runners were encouraged every step of the way by the local community who always get behind this event.

Coming in towards the finish on Victoria Road was Will Draper of Brownlee Fitness with Chris Powner of Winchester and District AC close on his heels. It was Draper who was victorious, winning the 2023 Stafford Half Marathon in 1:08:38 followed by Powner in 1:08:39. Cole Gibbens of Invicta East Kent AC was third in 1:12:21.

It was all smiles for City of Stoke AC’s Nia Rose Nokes as the women’s winner in 1:25:53. Kelly Butler was second female in 1:26:52 with Mary Senior of Garscube Harriers third female in 1:28:30.

Finishers made their way through the funnel into Victoria Park and the site of the Race Village to celebrate with family and friends. There were food and drink stalls and music from Stafford FM with the prize giving on the bandstand at 12.30pm.

Children and their parents enjoyed the 1K Fun Run that started at 10.10am from Bridge Stree with the theme ‘heroes and heroines’. A too-good-to-miss opportunity for kids (and big kids too!) to dress up as their favourite superhero and receive a medal in return.

Freedom Leisure also organise the Stafford 10K which will be opening soon for entries. Watch this space (and social media)...
