10K To Challenge You
If you're after a bit more hill in your next 10K, this could be the one for you...
Runners in Lincolnshire looking for a 10K race that offers more of a challenge than the super-flat county's usual offerings, should check out the Thurlby 10K which will take place on 14 July this year. Organisers say: "Looking for a 10K with a bit more of a challenge? Thurlby 10K includes Swallow Hill, which makes a change from much of the usual local terrain!"
Thurlby is located on the A15 just outside Bourne and both the 10K race and associated 3K Fun Run start and finish at the village's Lawrance Park. The races start at 10am with the Fun Run taking place around the centre of the village. This is followed by the main event, the 10k road race at 11:00.
The 10K starts with a climb up Swallow Hill out of the village, returning into Thurlby via Obthorpe Lane after passing through the villages of Manthorpe, Wilsthorpe and Obthorpe - runners will soon realise that this really is a tough route for this area and is 100% not a flat course.
Water stations will be situated around both the Fun Run and 10K routes as well as at the Lawrance Park start/finish. There will also be hot and cold drinks, ice creams and snacks available for for a small charge at Lawrance Park. Those taking part in both events can expect a medal and there will be trophies for some categories.
Speaking about the event's main purpose, organisers told us: "Any money raised from the races goes towards the youth groups in the village: Thurlby CP Academy, the 1st Thurlby Scout Group and Lawrance Park Hall."
Over 100 runners took part in 2023 with Bingley Harrier, Joe Wilkinson winning in a time of 31:24 and first female place being claimed by Abi Kefford of Yaxley Runners in 40:49. One runner who thoroughly enjoyed the experience was Tom Macdonald who commented post-race: "First time doing this race and the setup was fantastic and lovely for the whole family!"
