The Original Mountain Marathon is a two day mountain navigation challenge held in Galloway Forest Park, with competitors travelling through remote terrain before camping overnight and completing the second stage the following day.
Competitors choose from six course options. Elite, A and B are linear courses where checkpoints must be visited in a set order, while Long Score, Medium Score and Short Score give competitors a fixed amount of time to collect points from checkpoints of their choice. The organiser describes the overall challenge as approximately 40K to 100K, although the actual distance covered depends on course selection, navigation and individual route choices.
Competitors must remain self sufficient throughout the event, carrying mandatory equipment and everything required for the remote overnight camp. With navigation, endurance and route choice at the heart of the challenge, the OMM provides a demanding test of mountain craft across two days.
